At least thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
